“The Lion King” in 3D places first in the weekend box office

The 3D re-release of childhood favorite, “The Lion King”, topped the box office this weekend, beating the highly acclaimed “Moneyball.”

“The Lion King” earned $22.1 million over the weekend, according hollywood.com, taking first place in the box office for the second weekend in a row.

Columbia Pictures’ “Moneyball” brought in $20.6 million.

Three new releases took the rest of the top five spots. “Dolphin Tale” took third place with $20.3 million; “Abduction,” starring Taylor Lautner, made $11.2 million; and “Killer Elite” came in fifth with $9.5 million.
