NU’s new dance crew debut

Northeastern University’s newest dance organization, No Limits Dance Crew, is preparing for their first performance, which will be held at the Tower Auditorium Theatre at The Massachusetts School of Art and Design on April 3 at 7:30 p.m.

The one-time only show is free to the public and is expected to fill up fast. This student-run dance group has more than 120 dancers and will be showcasing 16 dance pieces in various styles, including Jazz, Hip Hop, Belly dancing and Lyrical genres to name a few. The all-inclusive No Limits Dance Crew is open to the entire Northeastern Community, and in addition to holding its own performances, the group is dedicated to collaborating with other NU creative arts groups and to being involved in the community.

The group also offers classes in all genres for $2 each for non-members. Classes are free for members. The classes are member-taught and the performance pieces are member-choreographed and this organization is truly a labor of love, and that love is for dance.

The Tower Auditorium is located directly in front of the Green Line E Branch’s Longwood Avenue stop at 621 Huntington Avenue.

Martha Graham once said, “There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium; and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, not how it compares with other expression. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.”

    Dance is about passion and expression, not who’s the best. I can’t wait to see this show!

  5. NuDanco is a very talented group of dancers, that is true. However, since this is NLDC’s first performance I think that it is completely unfounded for anyone to make a judgment on what group is “better” than another. Also, I don’t think that any of the dancers see this as a competition, it is a show for people who love to dance and are showing an audience what they have been working on. It is both immature and unfounded to be making judgments about which is a “better” dance group. I’m sure there are many many many groups who people would say are “better” than NuDanco.

  6. This isn’t a competition.

    If you talk to any member of the NUDANCO eboard and many of our dancers they’ll all say they are happy to see dance, as a whole, is growing at Northeastern.

    I wish No Limits the best of luck with their performance and hope they’ll do the same for NUDANCO.

  7. Having been a member of both NUDANCO and NLDC, I am just thrilled that I get the chance to perform and do what I love.

    Since I have been heavily involved in both groups, I can confidently say that both dance groups do NOT see this as a competition, and that they both respect each other’s performances and efforts.

    Let’s ignore any negativity and support each other. I plan attending both shows and am very excited to watch some beautiful and creative dances! Break a leg everyone! 🙂

  8. Ashley– Who makes comments like that? A childish bitch. NUDANCO is good. I’ve seen them before. My friend is in NO LIMITS and she is a fabulous person and dancer! Stop putting down another group because you’re an immature loser.

    On behalf of the Northeastern University Dance Company I want to apologize for “Ashely” and her remarks. Ashely, we thank you for your support but you’re out of line. It’s no secret that there’s tension between NUDANCO and NLDC but it in no ways justifies childish and useless remarks. Northeastern is a business focused school with very limited performing arts resources, specifically in the form of studio space. NLDC is a dedicated group that has expanded dance opportunities at Northeastern to try and meet a growing demand. It’s a wonderful venture and I’m happy for them but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t very difficult to watch a new group form with extremely similar goals and interests. Every semester NUDANCO fights desperately to acquire more studio space in the hopes of accommodating a larger performance company and holding open classes but the university can only allocate so many hours to one group. It’s terribly unfortunate that NUDANCO hasn’t been given the opportunity to expand as we have been trying to for years, but we have to do the best we can with the resources at hand. This is something that I lose sleep over because for me personally I feel as though I’ve let a lot of people down.
    With that being said, the show must go on. My executive board has a responsibility to accomplish our mission with the resources and recognition that the university can afford us. Our shows traditionally feature 50 talented and charismatic young dancers…but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t many other capable, passionate, and willing dancers out there. It’s an incredibly disheartening situation to have to turn people away but we can’t and won’t apologize for holding auditions. Our audition process sets a standard for performance and is our way of paying respect to the years and years that our dancers dedicated to their training from a very young age.

    I will be attending the NLDC performance on Friday evening to show my support for dance at NU. However, you can be sure that I will be wearing my NUDANCO sweatshirt because I remain extremely proud of my company, what we stand for, what we’ve accomplished, and what we’re capable of doing in the future. I hope to see some familiar faces from NLDC at our show on the 18th, equally decked out in their group’s apparel.

    Both groups have worked very very hard. So please….enough is enough.

  10. I would like to preface the following comments by saying that these are entirely my own opinions and do not reflect anything said or done by NLDC dancers or E-Board members.

    Dear Margaux,

    I have just today been informed of some kind of ridiculous “feud” that’s started up on the Blast magazine website regarding NUDANCO and NLDC. If you can even call it a feud as only 9 comments have been posted. However the letter you posted in response to it, frankly left me incensed and I felt the need to respond to you directly – especially since I have been a Choreographer and Performer for both groups (well before you were involved, I might add).

    Personally, I think you should have resisted the urge to post anything at all, but the fact that you have, not only displayed your own insecurity as President of NUDANCO, but was completely insulting on so many levels to the current E-Board and dancers of NLDC.

    First of all, this so called “tension” between the two groups, is obviously completely generated by your own dancers and has nothing to do with those involved in NLDC. The NLDC E-Board members and dancers have no interest in upstaging or competing with another dance group on campus – whether it be yours or any others. They simply want to be able to dance.

    The fact that you can say you support this new group, while simultaneously stating that it is “difficult to watch a new group form with extremely similar goals and interests” is laughable. It is quite clear that these two groups actually have very different goals and interests.

    From what I’ve seen, it seems that NLDC’s goal is to provide an opportunity for people to dance regardless of their level, background, connections, etc. Whereas NUDANCO has increasingly over the years turned into an outlet reserved only for a select few who manage to make good friends with those in charge – often at the expense of creativity, inclusion, or the best interest of the company. For this reason, I was confused by your comment that you “won’t apologize for holding auditions” as they “set a standard for performance and is our way of paying respect…” While I do agree that you shouldn’t have to apologize for holding auditions – I think it should be noted that those auditions have absolutely nothing to do with “respect” of any kind. Your company has turned into a giant popularity contest and for you to try to defend it as anything else is a joke.

    I think I can speak for all of the dancers who performed in my “Adore, Adore” piece, that the fact that you caved to the pressures of your insecure dancers and banished the alumni from your group is proof of this. (And please don’t bother with the “not enough space to rehearse” lines as we are all well aware of the whispering that went on during that semester.)

    I honestly can’t help but wonder though if once you and your fellow E-Board members graduate, this rule of “No Alumni” will be changed to accommodate you – or if you will crawl over with your tail between your respective legs, asking for a chance to dance with NLDC.

    Why then is it such a terrible thing for the people who haven’t been able to break into your exclusive clique, to then go off and create their own group, with their own rules. Maybe the reason you feel so threatened by NLDC is because they are succeeding by making everyone feel welcome, whether they are students or alumni, beginners or advanced, bellydancers or hip-hoppers. And this inclusion will most likely lead to the group continuing to grow and succeed in ways that NUDANCO may not be capable of.

    Please don’t go on about how the university hasn’t properly afforded you with the rehearsal space you need, as NLDC has scrambled for space whenever and where ever they can get it. Even when it means practicing in a carpeted classroom.

    And finally, I would like to point out that it will be incredibly tacky if you show up to our show wearing a NUDANCO sweatshirt. It has nothing to do with the fact that it is a t-shirt for another dance company, but because it is clearly your way of making a spectacle of yourself and continuing the notion that there is some feud that, in actuality, only exists in the minds of you and your dancers.

    It is true that both groups have worked very very hard. So why doesn’t each group continue focusing on making theirs the best it can be, and not bothering themselves with silly message boards or other ridiculous distractions.

    I’m sure I speak for all NLDC dancers, choreographers, and E-Board members when I say I truly wish you and NUDANCO the best. I personally can look back on the over 5 years I was a part of that company with fond memories. And I hope your current dancers will be able to say the same.

  12. i SEE MANY BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED DANCERS…AND SOME OF THEM WERE MEMBERS OF nudco DANCE COMPANY FOR FEW YEARS, AND THERE PERFORMANCES WERE SUBPERBS…

    GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN TO ALL OUR YOUNG TALENTED YOUNG WOMEN IN THE ( NO LIMITS DANCE CREW)…LOOKING FORWARD TO WATCH YOUR PERFORMANCE….
