E3 2012: Warner Bros. Interactive announces console MOBA Guardians of Middle Earth

Warner Bros. Interactive today announced a new Lord of the Rings title coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this fall. Guardians of Middle Earth is classified as a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game and will incorporate various characters from the Lord of the Rings novels as well as protagonists and settings from the upcoming film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Guardians of Middle Earth will bring up to 10 players together in five versus five competitive multiplayer battle arenas set in the environments of Middle Earth. MOBA games aren’t common on consoles, in fact, somewhat non-existent, so it will be interesting to see how the game plays out. The most recent console MOBA game was Awesomenauts and implemented 2D shooting and platforming elements.

“The MOBA genre is wildly popular with PC players and we are excited to bring it to consoles through the lore of Middle-earth,” said Samantha Ryan, Senior Vice President, Production and Development at WBIE.

We’ll be getting our hands on Guardians of Middle Earth at E3, so be on the lookout for our preview of the game next week!
