Burlington Mall evacuated after false reports of man with a gun

The Burlington Mall was evacuated Tuesday morning after police received a report of a person with a rifle. But it turned out the man only had an umbrella, police said.

According to police, two people called 911 reporting a man wearing a gray shirt and carrying a backpack and a short rifle inside the Nordstrom store shortly after 10 a.m.

Police positively identified the man at 11:48 a.m. He was only carrying an umbrella.

A State Police SWAT team is on scene, and a massive search was conducted. Television news helicopter footage showed police surrounding the mall.

Traffic around the area was also congested.
